This epistolary novel is written in the vernacular of its hero, a bush-league baseball player writing letters to a friend at home. It unmasks the world of baseball, although it was written in 1916 before the great Black Sox Scandal of 1919 changed the image of the sport. Ring Lardner ranks alongside A. J. Liebling as one of the greatest American sports writers of the twentieth century.
