Two Stories

Included in this volume are two of Wells’ stories that reflect on science both included in his short story collection. The Star is apocalyptic, and tells of the world’s reactions to a star that approaches the earth, and although there is ultimately no collision, it wrecks catastrophe; it was written in 1897. The Crystal Egg tells of a shop owner who finds a strange crystal egg that serves as a window into the planet; it was written in 1897 also, the same year as The War of the Worlds, and is often considered to be its precursor.
