The Yellow Wallpaper

First published in 1892 in The New England Magazine, The Yellow Wallpaper is a seminal piece of feminist writing, a story that consists of journal entries of a physician’s wife who, forced to recover from a “temporary nervous depression,” has been taken to a rented summer house. Forbidden to work, the wife’s diagnosis and treatment was a common experience for many women in the late nineteenth century. Gilman herself had endured such treatment, which had required her to “live as domestic a life as possible.” Also included are two of Gilman’s lesser known stories, The Giant Wistaria (1891) and If I Were A Man (1914).
