Father Brown featured in 53 short stories, the last written in 1938. Chesterton based the character on a priest working in Bradford, the Right Reverend John O’Connor, who was instrumental in the author’s conversion to Catholicism in 1922. Father Brown was intuitive rather than deductive, a ramshackle and stumpy alternative to the cerebral Sherlock Holmes. This is the first published collection of his exploits, published in 1911.
