Katherine Mansfield, alongside James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and D. H. Lawrence, shaped literary modernism  by experimenting with style, subject matter and theme, and by focusing on the inner lives of those she wrote about. She was a pioneer of the modern short story. Published in 1922, this was her third book of short stories, written in the shadow of the First World War and the death of her brother. When Mansfield died, Virginia Woolf noted in her diary that her writing was “the only writing I have ever been jealous of…”
